ecstacy-04Here in the United States Schedule I controlled substances like Ecstasy, Ketamine, and crystal meth are illegal under the Controlled Substances Act. However, for the next 48 hours these drugs are currently legal in Ireland due to an appeal of the Misuse of Drugs Act of 1977. The Court of Appeals made the ruling the morning of March 10th, and are in the process of passing an emergency legislation overnight.

The ruling found that additions to the list of illegal substances that were being added to the Act since 1977 were deemed unconstitutional. All government orders banning substances such as ecstasy and magic mushrooms are void, and it is not an offense to possess them.

The Irish government now has to force through emergency legislation in its parliament on Tuesday evening in response to the ruling. The emergency law will not be put into place until it has passed through the second chamber, as well as approval from Michael D Higgins, Ireland’s president.
